Worldbuilding Headcanon: Trolls & Gender

So I was thinking about troll gender. So here's my ideas!

Trolls originally didn't have gender as we would understand it. Trolls are a bi-sexed species, but its on the lines of the mothergrub & worker trolls. Since the mothergrub isn't really a person, all trolls have the same rough sexual anatomy. Because of this + their more a(nti)social nature, trolls didn't have genders, in its place of segregation of work was the hemo types which evolved into the hemocaste.

While the trolls originally didn't have gender, it did end up develping ideas of it. How these ideas came about are unknown & varied among diffrent troll groups. Despite this, it was largely agreed that the jades & those who acted like them were considered a gender category on its own. This gender later was labled as female, with male being conceptualized slightly later on as a companion & shadow gender. Unlike humans, or at least those of western cultures: trolls often conceptualized women as the more aggressive, blunt & stoic gender. With men being conceptualized as weaker, soft-spoken & less competent. Even then gender wasn't a binary, with genderless & neutrios being the most common across various pre-Alternia/Beforus groups.

Gender even to this day isn't a binary, and once in contact with humans, have a strange definition of transgender. With in the modern day, being that your cisgender is the one asigned by your lusus (which can be any gender the lusus is aware of). Once a troll changes, adds or removes something or the whole of their gender, they're trans. Transitioning, detransitioning & retransistioning are all the same thing for trolls, to them it's still changing your gender to something it wasn't before.

While this system of gender seems more fluid, it's also more rigid. Gender to trolls is in its whole preformance. So you are expected to dress, talk & act like the gender you say you are. oliswamp has suggested that to trolls, Gender NonConformity (GNC) & nonbinaryhood are the same thing. The term Swamp having made for it being "quantum-gender" which refers to the fact that the gendered indiviual is inbetween states, & thus to trolls is preforming gender non-normatively.

Rereading Homestuck [Act 1]

Now, I'm not actually reading Homestuck via the actual comic cause the current people in charge of it kinda fucked it over. So I'll be using Voxus's read-a-loud to look through the comic cause they actually add in various pieces missing from the comic rn.

NOTE: I'll be refering to J Egbert as John. I like June & know she's canon to the Dubious-Canon sequals, but that's not canon to the original comic and is constantly treated as male. So I'm refrening Egbert by male terms and name in this reread to avoid confusion.

Worldbuilding Headcanon: The Lussi & The Jades & The Seadwellers

Some headcanon worldbuilding how the lussi came about & how it intertwines with the jade caste.

So originally; the lussi weren't the main caretakers of the trolls, the jades were. Now in this version of fanon, the mothergrubs weren't originally reproductive enough to do for the whole planet. There were multiple & were often places on small-ish islands. This was done as trolls have no parental instincts as humans do. And thus keeping children on a pseudo-sheltered island is the best way for chidren to die the least.

At some point, jades start staying at the islands were the mothergrubs were. In my head this is done to keep more children alive while protecting the mothergrub from various threats (jades likely having been chosen for their small number + resistance to the sun). The jades do this task of theirs, which puts them into contact with trolls more often them, most others of their kind back then. This may have caused jades to become something of leaders to the groups of troll chilren & troll adults that might've grown attached to the ways they handled things. In the long term, jades caused the larger social develpment of trolls.

Now trolls in my head, are very prone to mutation. The legal definition of mutation the Alternian or Beforan empire will give are legal & politically motivated definitions. The horns, the teeth, the tails, ears and everything else is prone to mutation a lot more then with earth lifeforms.

Because of troll habits of leaving their young on islands, this caused a bunch of them to mutate aquatic traits. These groups of seadwellers ended being mostly mutated with violet blood & long lifespans. These trolls eventually tried to speize power, and some successfully did. But the jades upheld a political & cultural power unchalleged via their role of community mothers. Even those that disagreed with the jades, rarely sided with the violets instead. They needed a way to usurp the jades as parental figures.

The lussi, back then, was a generic term for a pseudo or straight up domesticated pets (a common mutation of domestication being white fur/scales/keretin/etc). And because of how low matainace troll young can be, these pets were at times trained to help care for them. Trolls had already a habit of prefering strong domestication over mechanical advancements if possible. The violets took their chance and started breeding & altering the lussi. No longer just beasts that were pets; these lussi often had troll-level intelligence & were able to care for trolls without having the means or rights to command compensation of any kind for their work. Jades slowly watched as trolls either greedy, lazy or short sighted, left grubs to be grabed by the new lussi & spread further out. Causing troll groups to exist who were a lot less loyal to the jades. And slowly but surely, the violets grabbed more & more political power. Till they were the top authority in any place on the planet.
